Hi guys, be sure to check out my latest page dedicated to the highly appraised 20th century film ‘Blade Runner‘. This film as far as I have seen, consists of various Film Noir elements as well as some minimal usage of Surrealist techniques, similar to what I came across in my analysis of ‘Mulholland Drive‘. Having not entirely watched the film so far, I suspect that this film will hold greater similarities to the Australian film ‘The Square‘. I suspect this because the film revolves around the life of a blade runner who as I understand, is basically a hitman that works directly for the police force, tracking down certain replicants of human beings. This draws a contrast to ‘The Square’ as it was strictly a Neo-Noir film that focused on the ideologies of crime and secrecy, both of which are major themes explored in ‘Blade Runner’.
Furthermore, this film utilises technical codes such as lighting and camera angles to reinforce some of the ethics of this cultural movement, Film Noir. For example, Ridley Scott allocated for their to be a bird’s eye angle of the metropolis as Deckard was being transported in a ship to the police’s headquarters. This revealed how much this civilisation has industrialised as there were flying ships, skyscrapers and other exorbitant buildings and sculptures. However in a later scene, Scott manipulates the usage of lighting to create an emphasis on the significant divide between the rich and the destitute as a woman presented to be homeless searches for comfort in a dark alleyway, using garbage bags as if they were a blanket. This reflects on the ethics of Film Noir as it was built on the ideas of defeatism and nihilism.
